What it covers

Tenant insurance usually covers your belongings if they are stolen or damaged, and liability if you accidentally damage someone else's property. It can also pay for a hotel if your unit is unlivable.

Do you need it

It is not required by law, but many landlords ask for it in the lease. It is often inexpensive compared with the cost of replacing your things.

Shop around

Compare a few quotes. Ask what is excluded and what the deductible is.
